The Gothia Cup: One of the Largest International Youth Tournaments

This week marks the start of the Gothia Cup 2024 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

One of the world’s largest and most international youth football tournaments, the Gothia Cup is owned by the Eyeball partner club, BK Häcken.

Catering to boys and girls aged 11 to 18, the competition is divided into various age groups and skill levels to ensure fair play. Teams play multiple matches throughout the week-long event, culminating in finals held at the iconic Gamla Ullevi stadium.

In 2023, 1878 teams from 69 countries participated. 4771 matches were played on 107 pitches.

Not just football

The Gothia Cup is renowned for its international diversity, promoting cultural exchange and unity through sport. Besides football, there are numerous social and cultural activities, including opening ceremonies, parades, and other events that encourage sustainability and diversity amongst its international participants.

Notable Participants

Some notable players who participated in the Gothia Cup, who went on to play for their national teams include: Zlatan Ibrahimović, Xabi Alonso (with Antiguoko), Andrea Pirlo (won with US Voluntas), Alan Shearer (with Wellington Juniors), Emmanuel Adebayor (with Les Eperviers).

The Gothia Puma trophy

The Gothia Puma trophy is a U17 tournament within the event that opposes 24 selected teams, half of which are Swedish academies while the other half are 12 international academies.

It’s a chance to catch a glimpse of some of the most talented U17 youngsters, a lot of which are on the brink of, or are already playing first-team football. Many players of note already have an Eyeball profile.
