14-Year-Old Prodigy makes MLS History

In the world of Major League Soccer (MLS), where seasoned professionals often dominate the headlines, a new name is making waves: Cavan Sullivan. At just 14 years old, this young phenom from Philadelphia has broken a long-standing MLS record.

A Remarkable Rise

On July 17, 2024, Sullivan was named to the Philadelphia Union’s squad for their match against the New England Revolution. That day he made history by becoming the youngest player in MLS history to step onto the field. Sullivan, who is 14 years and 293 days old, eclipsed Freddy Adu’s record by 13 days—a monumental achievement for someone so young.

A Historic Signing

Sullivan’s inclusion in the squad is no fluke. In May 2024, Philadelphia Union announced the signing of the U.S. youth international in a groundbreaking MLS deal. Sullivan’s contract is the most lucrative homegrown contract in the league’s history. This signing not only made him the youngest player in Philadelphia Union’s history to join the first team but also positioned him as the fifth-youngest player ever to sign a first-team contract in MLS.

But the significance of this deal goes beyond just his age. Sullivan’s contract includes a unique clause: he will transfer to Manchester City when he turns 18, marking the first time such an agreement has been included in an MLS player’s first contract. This move signals the high expectations surrounding Sullivan and the belief that he has the potential to shine on the global stage.

An Extraordinary Talent

Ernst Tanner, Philadelphia Union’s sporting director, had nothing but admiration for Sullivan’s abilities. Speaking to the Athletic, he said: “Cavan is undeniably a rare and extraordinary talent. At just 14-years-old, his natural skill and vision are far beyond his years. His advanced soccer IQ, paired with his ability to read plays, advance the ball, and score, show just how high his ceiling will be.”

Sullivan’s journey began in March when he made his professional debut with Union II, Philadelphia’s second team, in MLS Next Pro, the developmental league. Coming off the bench, Sullivan made an immediate impact by providing the game-winning assist—a moment that foreshadowed his rapid ascent in the soccer world.

His talent has not gone unnoticed on the international stage either. Sullivan led the U.S. under-15 team to victory in the 2023 CONCACAF U-15 Championship, where he was awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.

Soccer is Getting Younger

Sullivan’s rapid rise is emblematic of a broader trend in soccer—one where the game is getting younger. As the sport evolves, the age at which players break into the professional ranks is steadily decreasing. This shift reflects a growing emphasis on youth development, with clubs investing heavily in their academies and scouting networks to identify and nurture talent at an earlier age.

This trend isn’t just confined to the MLS. Around the world, we’re seeing players like Spain’sLamine Yamal and England’s Ethan Nwaneri, both of whom made their professional debuts at 15, showcasing that age is no longer a barrier to success at the highest level.
